Just received a summons, but I am ...I am terrified. Just received a summons, but I am a temporary contract worker. I lead multi-million $$$ global IT projects. If I don't show up to work, there is no back-fill to take up my slack, the manager just calls the staffing firm or another staffing firm and replaces me.

There are no laws protecting temporary, contingent contract workers. The new popular term for what I am is an "independent contractor." It keeps me from being eligible for unemployment insurance when they let me go. It keeps both the client whom I am contracted to and the agency who has contracted me out safe from any laws against firing me for not being there. Once the client ends my contract for any reason, my relationship with the contracting company is over. Zero, ziltch, nada.. I am back on the street looking for a job.

The problem is, there are no jobs. IT jobs are outsources at breakneck speeds to India, Malaysia, Costa Rica, E. Europe, China... even a mandate at my current job is to release as many US workers as possible and all hiring has to take place in these countries. I am lucky to have a job. It took me a year of being unemployed to find this job, and that was before the new human resourcing mandate. I have spent the last 18 months on this contractor gig sending out hundreds of resumes, all with zero response. No interest, no interviews. If I am let go, I will be devastated.

I will have zero income. I will lose my house. I will lose my car. I will not qualify for unemployment. I will have to tell my daughter that I can't pay for her 2nd semester at college. I have no family to fall back on, they are all dead. I am alone. I will lose everything, I won't even have the money to pay for a storage shed to store all my household belongings while I live in a cardboard box with the scumbags and figure out how to survive. It will ruin my life, it will ruin my daughter's future.

Is that what Jury duty is supposed to be about? Ruin people's lives just to have a warm ass in a chair to give some scum bag impartial ears to lie to? Screw them. I will not put my life and livelihood nor my daughter's future at risk for some sociopathic scum. If they try to stick me on a jury, at 5pm, I will travel to the next county, sign a lease on an apartment, then change my address and driver's license online. THey will find that I no longer live in that county!

I have had to do a lot of things to keep myself from sinking into the abyss, to keep myself from falling off the edge, to protect myself. This is no different.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699527670991354717.post-33470028339747955652017-08-22T12:41:05.864-07:002017-08-22T12:41:05.864-07:00I have to laugh every time I see the propaganda po...I have to laugh every time I see the propaganda posters saying jury duty is a privilege and an obligation. California is NOT one of them. I have used the ICBFI card at least 3 times now. It's not always pleasant, esp when you tell them cops lie (they most certainly do) b/c the judges feel that has been overused. But if cops weren't rogue it couldn't be used as an excuse. In reply to Anonymous on 4/8/2013, I couldn't agree more. I resent having to "serve" against my will - would you want someone with an attitude of hating what they do and wanting to cut it short to get back to earning a living - do you really want them judging you? C'mon. It is absolutely ridiculous that you have to lose all your pay for jury duty. 40.00 @ day in NY does not even cover 2 hrs of my husbands pay and the state says it takes 4-6weeks to pay you. If your employer has more than 10 employees he has to pay the 40.00 a day. So, in essence the criminal is still s___ing us up the arse as our family suffers or has to use vacation pay that we could save for a layoff. I wasn't even trying to get of jury duty the first time I said that, I was just being honest... got booted out so fast my eyes were spinning.

Second choice would be invert the "if they're arrested they did something wrong" argument. If asked about that I'd say, "Just the opposite; knowing that 95% of people in prison today take a plea and no jury trial, the fact that they're going to trial means they must have OVERWHELMING reason that they can prove their innocence".

I really believe both of these. I'd also suggest that you say it out loud and take the opportunity to educate the rest of the jury before you're removed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699527670991354717.post-60130456224323351352012-09-23T10:02:59.229-07:002012-09-23T10:02:59.229-07:00I had to go to The Bronx courthouse and when they ...I had to go to The Bronx courthouse and when they called my name the second day I went in and listened to the case when they asked who cannot serve I just said I don't want to be here.
